Punk Milk Crate
by Malcolm Hill
The milk crate is the symbol of the punk music revolution.
The milk crate is a great example of a group of people taking an object, designed for a purpose, and appropriating it for their own use.
More than just a symbol, the milk crate is actually the most highly functional and practical object you could find in a pre Ikea world.
Because, well….
It can be what ever you want it to be!
It keeps changing according to its use!
You can….
put your amp on it,
run a hot lighting desk on it,
build a stage,
create a bed base,
you can make a kitchen table out of it,
put records in,
watch gigs from…
You can put four milk crates on top of each other to climb over a fence to steal more milk crates
The milk crate is light to carry but takes incredible weight
You can’t break it!
And how much does it cost?
It’s free!
And - it’s all around!
Particularly in the early morning and late at night in the inner city.
And it’s very punk - because you have to be ‘in the know’ - you have to have ‘suss’ when you see milk crates. They are hiding in plain sight.
And…the Geometric design…is very Mod….
But, it is also ancient.
In mythology the interlaced triangle, is an ancient talisman
In Indian mythology, where the swastika comes from, the Crossed lines equal power.
The milk crate as a magical keystone you place in the right slot and new realties emerge…
That is why the milk crake is the most important symbol of the DIY music revolution
